Los Angeles- L.A. - city of Angels. Like New York, its more of an idea than a real place. Even the reality of LA is a fractured one. Hard to define a city where dreams are a commodity and illusion is a trademark owned by George Lucas's Special Effects company. Los Angeles used to be a town, and a city after that. LA had a good public transport systm until the gas companies got together and decided to create the prototypical motor city for the future. It became the post-war dream with freeways connecting everywhere. A truly fractured consciousness for an age where the automobile was rapidly becoming an extension of one's own body. The very concept of the city became something different, something exciting, vibrant and new. And the darkside of a community stretched to breaking point also surfaced all too quickly. Watts 1969 gave us one idea. The 1990's Rodney King uproar gave us another one.
